DRMs and Platforms

Along with the more stringent protection requirements associated with distribution of today's premium 4K and UHD content, there is a consistent demand for a more or less invisible DRM operational resource that will never adversely impact the user experience. Device operating systems and video streaming platforms have chosen to embed different Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies as native security options. It's often a complicated task to figure out which DRMs you need to support for your content to reach the device of choice. Hopefully, the content of the comparison matrix here will help make things a little clearer.

Notes:

  1. DASH CENC DRM is offered through EZDRM's Universal DRM offering and includes PlayReady, Widevine and WisePlay over DASH via CENC (Common Encryption).
  2. Refer to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-drm to learn how to enable DRM on Firefox.
  3. Not all Smart TV Alliance TVs support Widevine.
  4. WisePlay DRM is supported on Huawei phones and tablets that use Kirin 990 chips (EMUI 10.1 or later) or use other chips (EMUI 11.0 or later)
  5. Widevine in Edge on Windows and Mac OS is L3 - software level DRM only.

Our comparison matrix is up-to-date as of early 2022. We try to keep it as current as we can, but as new devices come out, this list may become out of date. If you would like us to list your device, please let us know.
